Today I want to discuss the Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy (EPF). For info on Plantar Fasciitis see our website here. EPF is a less invasive surgical intervention for Plantar Fasciitis.

Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy

Instead of a larger surgical incision which allows the surgeon to visualize the surgical field, EPF uses a small, lighted tube camera to see inside the foot. The tube is roughly the size of a pencil, inserted through a small incision. Through another incision on the other side of the foot, a small hook with a sharp belly is inserted. Once the fascia is identified, it is cut and released from the heel bone. The instruments are removed and one small stitch can close each incision. The wounds are dressed with light gauze and a stiff soled surgical shoe is applied. Most patients can bear partial weight immediately. Stitches come out in 10-14 days and you’re back in shoes around that time.

Q: Can you remove a heel spur through an EPF?
A: No. Heel spur resection requires an open incision. Heel spurs themselves are not necessarily the source of pain. They are a simple manifestation that the fascia is taught, but are painless.

Always consult a professional and never self diagnose.
