stem-cells3A Stem Cell is an undifferentiated (pluripotent) cell that has the potential to turn into whatever the body requires. These cells have been highly praised for their potential at curing diseases like blindness, diabetes, certain cancer and muscular dystrophy. Theories exist that they could help regenerate nerves and nervous tissue like the brain.  Stem Cells have been utilized in medicine since the 1980’s. Their use was highly criticized as the harvesting of these young cells occurred primarily via fetal or neonatal donors. This controversial means of attaining the stem cells limited their use throughout much of the health care world. In 2007, two scientists from two separate universities develop papers describing their generating of usable stem cells from adult skin cells. This discovery made possible the creation of stem cells from non-embryo sources.

In Podiatry, stem cells can be applied to chronic non-healing wounds, tendon and ligament damage, inflammation and injury. They can be used to fill soft tissue or bone voids and to supplement the healing time and quality of surgery. Diseases like heel pain, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, tendon and ligament injuries, broken ankles and foot bones, ankle and foot ligament sprains and more.

Musculoskeletal Applications

Musculoskeletal injuries are diverse and may require surgical intervention to achieve a more complete repair. While steroids provide temporary relief on injury and inflammation, they can pose a risk to the joint if used to frequently.

FloGraft by Applied Biologics has been developed for clinical use as a soft tissue defect filler that can cover and protect localized areas of inflammation in vivo or fill soft tissue defects. FloGraft can be implanted directly at the area of inflammation or injury. This allograft is easy to use and has less risks than traditional corticosteroids.
